The former congressman from Cary faced an uphill Democratic primary against former Gov. Roy Cooper, whom Wiley is expected to endorse.
Democrat Wiley Nickel is expected to suspend his campaign for North Carolina’s open U.S. Senate seat and endorse former Gov. Roy Cooper in the race, people directly familiar with Nickel’s plans told WRAL on Friday.
Cooper was presented as a possible running mate for Kamala Harris in 2024, but ultimately that position went to Governor Tim Walz.
Former Governor Roy Cooper may launch a Senate campaign as early as next week. According to Axios, “multiple sources” have said that Cooper intends to announce the long-speculated run for the seat currently occupied by Republican Thom Tillis in the United States Senate.
Since Sen. Thom Tillis said he wouldn’t seek a third term, eyes have been on the former North Carolina governor to run in the Democratic primary.
Roy Cooper, a Democrat who served two terms as governor of North Carolina, has begun fundraising off of national Republicans' recent vote to slash Medicaid, asking supporters to "stand together" with him.
