Denzel Washington, Spike Lee and A$AP Rocky brought New York City to Cannes for the world premiere of their neo-noir crime thriller “Highest 2 Lowest,” which earned a five and a half-minute second standing ovation.

The reinterpretation of Akira Kurosawa’s masterful 1963 police procedural about an abduction and ransom plot also stars Jeffrey Wright and A$AP Rocky.

“Highest 2 Lowest” is a thriller that’s loosely based on the 1959 novel “King’s Ransom” by Ed McBain (real name Evan Hunter). The flick is the English reinterpretation of Akira Kurosawa’s 1963 Japanese movie “High and Low.”

Denzel Washington got into heated confrontation with a handsy photographer at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival. The actor, 70, was walking the red carpet Monday for the premiere of his movie “Highest 2 Lowest” when he began exchanging words with one of the many photogs lined up to capture the event.
