Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has said Russia is closely monitoring the situation, after US President-elect Donald Trump refused to rule out military action to take Greenland from Denmark. Peskov said the Arctic was in Russia's "sphere of national and strategic interests and it is interested in peace and stability there".

Vladimir Barbin, Russia's Ambassador to Denmark, has urged the United States "not to interfere in the political future of Greenland, " adding that Russia would respond in the event of "further deterioration of the situation in the Arctic".

"I don't know what he what he means by that," Florida Senator Rick Scott said when asked about Trump's Greenland comments.

Greenland’s future could be the kind of Compact of Free Association that America has with three Pacific Island states, Trump aides are telling reporters. Under these Compacts, the island nations get sovereignty, development assistance, and the right of residents to live and work in America. In return, Washington takes over defense.
