A California utility said Thursday that its equipment likely sparked a wildfire in Los Angeles that broke out the same day as two massive blazes in the area killed at least 29 people and destroyed thousands of homes.

Southern California Edison, a unit of utility Edison International , said on Monday preliminary analysis of data showed a "momentary and expected increase in current" on its energized lines in the Eaton Canyon corridor on Jan.

Southern California Edison has reported a Jan. 7 fault on a power line that was connected miles away from the lines located near the origin of the deadly Eaton Fire that sparked that day.

Edison International’s utility said it is looking at whether a decommissioned power line started the Eaton wildfire as part of a probe into the cause of the blaze that razed more than 9,000 structures near Los Angeles.

Southern California Edison (SCE), a subsidiary of Edison International, said on Thursday that it was probing whether its equipment was associated with the ignition of two Los Angeles-area wildfires this year.

The utility has noted multiple irregularities, but maintains there is no evidence its equipment sparked the destructive Eaton fire.
