House Republicans vote to repeal a decision that placed a California fish, longfin smelt, on the endangered species list. Democrats and environmentalists condemned the action.

Republicans moved a step closer Thursday to repealing a federal waiver allowing California to ban gasoline-powered cars by 2035, a policy that had drawn opposition from automakers, fuel producers and President Donald Trump himself.

Republicans, joined by a handful of Democrats, voted to eliminate California’s electric vehicle policy, which had been adopted by 11 other states.
