Police in the District are investigating after a man was found suffering from a gunshot wound in the back of a vehicle in Northeast.

A 21-year-old intern in Republican Rep. Ron Estes' office was fatally shot in Northwest Washington, D.C. on Monday night, and authorities are investigating the incident.

The Fourth of July holiday ended in tragedy in the 1000 block of 14th Street Southeast, where D.C. police said a 3-year-old girl was hit by a stray bullet. Police say the little girl is being treated for critical injuries at a hospital.

The victim has since been identified as 38-year-old Tiffany Montgomery and the man has been identified by police as 43-year-old Patrick Cockrell Jr. It is unclear what the exact relationship was between the two. MPD says the deadly shooting is being investigated by homicide detectives.
