MOSCOW: A powerful earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 7.0 struck Russia’s far eastern Kuril Islands on Sunday, days after a major seismic event rattled the nearby Kamchatka Peninsula, prompting tsunami concerns across the Pacific.

A significant earthquake, initially reported at a magnitude of 6.7, struck Russia's Kuril Islands. The magnitude was later updated to 7 by the U.S. Geological Survey and the Pacific Tsunami Warning System.

There is no tsunami threat to the Philippines from the magnitude 7.0 earthquake that struck Kuril Islands on Sunday afternoon, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).
