The Fighting Irish's last meeting with the Buckeyes became notorious not just for the on-field action but also for the pre- and post-game antics involving Day and Holtz
Legendary head coach Lou Holtz made his pick for Monday's national title matchup known. The No. 7-seeded Notre Dame Fighting Irish and No. 8 Ohio State are competing in the College Football Playoff National Championship in Atlanta, Ga., at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
It started following last year's meeting between the two teams, which saw Day fire back at Holtz, who questioned the physicality of Ohio State before the game. Although Holtz is 88 years old, he didn't forget Day's comments and took a jab at him on social media on Wednesday.
After Ohio State beat Notre Dame last year, Ryan Day had a long message for Holtz in his postgame interview. He said that he wanted to know where Holtz was, and that he couldn't believe what was said about his team. Day also insisted that his team was tough.
Ohio State RB Chip Trayanum plowed through the middle of Notre Dame's defensive line for a 1-yard touchdown on third-and-goal with one second left on the clock to seal the win. During a postgame interview with the NBC broadcast, Day, unprompted, went off on Holtz in a clip that went instantly viral.
It should be noted that Holtz was an assistant at Ohio State during the 1968 championship season under Woody Hayes so he has a little Scarlet and Gray in him as well.
Ohio State coach Ryan Day, who lost to rival Michigan for a fourth straight year earlier this season and was briefly rumored to be on the hot seat, has helped lead his team through a stacked playoff field into the title game, where the Buckeyes will be looking to clinch their first national championship in a decade.

Former Notre Dame coach Lou Holtz and Ohio State coach Ryan Day are still trading barbs before both teams play each other in the College Football Playoff national title game.
Lou Holtz famously called out Ryan Day for OSU's lack of toughness. Day then fired back at the former ND coach, who thinks Irish will win the natty.
