New Orleans safety Tyrann Mathieu, a three-time All-Pro who was known as the “Honey Badger” for the relentless play in college that made him a Heisman Trophy finalist, said on the day the Saints opened training camp Tuesday that he is retiring from the NFL after 12 seasons.

Tyrann Mathieu announced on Tuesday that he's retiring from football at 33 years old. Mathieu played 12 seasons as a playmaking NFL safety following a standout college career at LSU. He played his last three NFL seasons with his hometown New Orleans Saints.

Tyrann Mathieu announced his retirement from the NFL. He began his 12-year career with the Cardinals in 2013 and played five seasons for the team.
