Russia launched a New Year's Day drone strike on the Ukrainian capital Kyiv early on Wednesday, killing two people, wounding at least six others and damaging buildings in two districts, authorities said.

A Russian drone attack towards the Ukrainian capital on Friday killed one person and wounded four in the Kyiv suburbs, local officials said. Moscow's forces have escalated their aerial strikes across Ukraine through the first weeks of winter, including a New Year's Day drone attack targeting central Kyiv that killed two.

In the early hours of January 1, 2025, Russia conducted a drone attack on central Kyiv, leading to the deaths of two individuals and injuries to at least six others. The assault caused significant damage to residential buildings in the Pecherskyi and Sviatoshynskyi districts.

On the night of January 8, during the drone attack on Kyiv region, the air alert lasted about 7 hours. The falling wreckage of the downed target caused minor damage, according to the Kyiv regional police.

"Such fire damage is an integral part of combat operations of Ukraine's Defense Forces units, which are engaged in combat operations on the territory of the Russian Federation," the General Staff of Ukraine's Armed Forces said.

Russia has launched a new offensive on Kyiv, the Ukrainian military reported late Wednesday (Jan 8). Of the 64 Shahed-type drones, Ukraine air defence has reportedly shot down 41 with 22 enemy decoy drones lost locally.
