NEW YORK — The Rangers have been playing better since the holiday break, but for that to matter, it has to translate into results. It did Thursday night against the New Jersey Devils, a rival team near the top of the standings that blew out New York the last time they met.

In desperate need of wins, the Rangers notched an overtime victory over the Devils thanks to a goal from Sam Carrick.

After falling in overtime to Dallas in their previous game, the Rangers came through with a much-needed 3-2 win in overtime over the Devils on Thursday night at Madison Square Garden. The Rangers were looking for some redemption against their rivals from New Jersey after being outscored 10-1 by the Devils in their previous two meetings.

Rangers goaltender Igor Shesterkin will start Thursday's game against the visiting Devils, coach Peter Laviolette announced.

The New York Rangers didn't have to fend for themselves without their prized goaltender for long. Igor Shesterkin is set to return to the cage on Thursday against the New Jersey Devils at Madison Square Garden after missing four games to an upper-body injury per NHL insider Elliotte Friedman.
